Pierres lunaires
L'IRSNB possède quatre fragments de poussière lunaire, extraits des 22 kg de roches recueillies par les astronautes Neil Armstrong et Buzz Aldrin lors de la mission américaine Apollo 11 de juillet 1969. Un fragment de basalte, récolté par l’astronaute Harrison Schmitt lors de la mission Apollo 17 de décembre 1972, complète le matériel lunaire de l'Institut. Les 5 échantillons, accompagnés de fanions nationaux qui ont pris part aux deux expéditions, ont été donnés au peuple belge par le président Richard Nixon et confiés à l'IRSNB par le roi Baudouin.
Ces dons étaient accompagnés des notes suivantes:
- "Presented to the people of the Kingdom of Belgium by Richard Nixon, President of the United States of America. The flag of your nation was carried to the Moon and back by Apollo 11, and the fragment of the Moon's surface was brought to Earth by the crew of that first manner lunar landing".
- "This fragment is a portion of a rock from the Taurus-Littrow Valley of the Moon. It is given as a symbol of unity of human endeavour and carries with it the hope of the American people for a world of peace. The flag of your nation was carried to the Moon aboard Spacecraft America during the Apollo XVII mission, December 7-19, 1972. Presented to the people of the Kingdom of Belgium from the people of the United States of America; Richard Nixon, 1973".
