International cooperations

The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) as one of the largest Natural History Museums (NHMs) in Europe, plays a major role in international cooperation within various domains going from research to public awareness in science through museums partnerships, networking and international projects.

Current projects

Participation to the PLACES project aiming at building the European City of Scientific Culture.

Previous projects

  • Coordination of the eCASTEx project, composed of 4 NHM and the European Science Centres network ECSITE, which aims at creating a centralized system (online database) to promote at international level the transfer of, and give visibility to, products developed by science museums and science centres for various publics unfamiliar with research and scientific issues.
  • Participation to the GAPP project aiming at collecting valuable data on gender differences in interest for science and technology careers, and then to test a series of innovative practical experiences aimed at overcoming such gender differences at an early stage in education.
  • Participation to the AQUARING project aiming at collecting the cultural heritage of the digital content on aquatic resources and environment available in most of European organisations.
  • Participation in symposiums and conferences popularising science, notably in the ECSITE network (this page will be opened in a new window).

Collections

  • European subsidies that can finance study visits of non Belgian researchers (formerly under (ABC project, 2001-2004) under the SYNTHESYS project since 2004. A call for research projects is organized each year in October. For more information: click here.
  • Exchanges between curators to standardise the management of collections and to develop them at the European level CETAF;
  • Participation in the large electronic access network to collections (European Network for Biodiversity Information: ENBI).

Expertise

  • Implementing national mandates for global undertakings;
  • Scientific management and secretariat of the Belgian National Focal Point to the Convention on Biological Diversity;
  • Capacity building for biodiversity in developing countries;
  • Involvement in many international scientific organisations.
  • Participation to EDIT, the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT), a Network of Excellence supported by the European Commission, into which the world's largest taxonomic institutions aim at integrating their research and data management capacities to improve data availability and taxonomic knowledge production.

  • On-the-field missions for collection studies;
  • Partnerships in European scientific projects.
